Sanoma Media Trainee is an 8-month training program for students at the end of their studies or recent graduates interested in developing Finland’s largest digital media products and brands.

We searched for trainees from versatile backgrounds and profiles to boost our digital transformation. We got almost 1 000 applications for 12 positions.

Program starts on May 6th. Almost every Finn will see their work, and this is just a beginning of their journey.

We have a long history of successful summer job recruits, which have brought many committed digital industry experts into our ranks. That's why we decided to expand our talent acquisition by launching a new Sanoma Media Trainee program. Technological growth and the rapid development of digital products at Sanoma in areas such as news, entertainment, video, audio and marketing solutions have led to an increasing need for fresh experts in an ever-changing operating environment. Today, Sanoma Media Finland employs more than 150 technology and data experts as well as numerous product experts and designers. 

Technologies

Wide range of programming languages and technologies

Sanoma utilizes a wide range of programming languages and technologies in its development work, as well as experimenting with new innovations. We use the following programming languages, among others:

TypeScript | Python | Java | Scala | Kotlin | Swift | .NET Core | JavaScript | Rust | Haskell | Delphi 

We use Github extensively for version control and AWS CDK and CloudFormation for infrastructure management. We operate extensively in cloud environments with DevOps principles in both AWS and Azure environments. Our deployments are typically fully automated and we use Github Actions and AWS CodePipeline for CI/CD, and host our apps in AWS cloud using Docker or serverless functions. We use several different testing tools and test automation, thus we choose the tool on a case-by-case basis. In terms of user experience and design, we work with Figma, Supernova and Adobe products. In addition to analytics, we use Cambri -testing tool and various a/b testing methods for measuring experience and data-driven decision-making. 

What is Sanoma Media Trainee?

Sanoma Media Trainee is an 8-month training program with a fixed monthly salary. During the program, you will do meaningful and diverse work. Your colleagues include the best people in the industry: creative talents, top experts, praised supervisors and exceptionally nice people.  
 
We expect our trainees to have ambition but we also provide support and experience for the beginning of one's career. We are looking for motivated digital industry workers to develop into experts in the media field at Sanoma with real work projects and products that are important to us. Sanoma Media Trainee -program provides a solid foundation for a career in digital product development. The trainees have an opportunity for a permanent employment at Sanoma. We are also open to support a thesis during the trainee period. The trainee program has an agreed fixed duration of 8 months (May-December) and a salary of EUR 2 800 per month. 

We expect the applicant to be ready to commit to our organization as an employee as well as be interested in the media industry and product development. The applicant must be able to take the initiative but have good teamwork skills, as all work happens within a team. Finnish language is considered an advantage but is not a requirement for applying. At Sanoma, we can also support the employee's Finnish language development, and we already offer this opportunity to several of our English-speaking employees. The work will be carried out in hybrid-mode, but the applicant must also commit to working at Sanomatalo in Helsinki on a weekly basis and attending some of the ceremonies on-site. Q&A:

What is the application process like for this role?

We will start going through the applications already before the application period ends on 27th of February. There is a two-part interview process for the selected applicants in March and we will also inform those who were not selected to the process. The recruits will be decided at the latest in the beginning of April, when we also inform those who didn’t pass through the process. Work is scheduled to start in the beginning of May. 

What are the language preferences?

Finnish language is considered an advantage but is not a requirement for applying. We will organize the program in English if at least one participant doesn’t speak Finnish. Proficient level of English is mandatory since we have many English speaking experts developing our digi products. 

What will I be working with?

Each trainee will be assigned a development team in either news & feature media or our data capabilities team that serves multiple different media brands. Examples of what the trainees might work with: 

Product managers:

  • Planning and building new storytelling features to our new sites
  • Discovering ways to engage our users to our news services
  • Helping our editorial teams to deliver news to readers with better processes and technologies 
     

Designers:

  • Enhancing the user experience of our news site and app frontpages
  • Helping developers to build new UI elements to our news services with the help of our design system
  • Designing better news services with the help of user data and a/b testing
  • Developing our design system further with the designer team
  • Conducting user surveys and building new engaging functionalities to engage our users  

Developers: 

  • Developing our news delivery platform with DevOps principles to help all other development teams to be efficient and increase developer experience
  • Improving user engagement with building engaging functionalities to our news sites and apps
  • Discovering and delivering new formats of storytelling and editorial processes
  • Building and enhancing our data pipelines and further processing our data in our shared data platform 
  • Improving data sharing to our internal and external clients with
